I’m a self-taught historical clothing lover. If I could, I would spend each and every day sewing beautiful dresses, but I can’t, so in the meantime I’m a nanny.
I started sewing at a very young age. I remember being six or seven when I taught myself how to sew in straight lines on the sewing machine. My mother, bless her soul, does not sew but encouraged me to continue sewing if that’s what I enjoyed doing. When I was around 12 years old, my parents gave me patterns to make the dresses found in the American Girl Doll catalogs. Within a year, my sister’s dolls were better dressed than anyone else in the family.
I’m not the greatest seamstress in the world, nor do I hope to be. But I love creating beautiful works of art that people can wear and since I’m looking at 5+ years of grad school for my desire to be an art historian, sewing is the next best thing.
